Self Deception

This is an article about lying to yourself.
Written by Gena Bean, Boston-area Stress Reduction Consultant.

There is a reason that you lie to yourself, right?

It probably has something to do with navigating inner conflict and pain.
But can you really navigate around anything when you have no idea what it even is?

Mindfulness helps you to access the root causes of your inner conflict and pain. Simply having that mindful access will not necessarily cure anything, but the access to your core self gives you options. It will allow you to act effectively to address your own healing.

Without Mindfulness, in a state of mindLESSness, there is no action plan, no firm ground to stand on, and no knowledge of what's even happening inside of you.
With Mindfulness, with the power that comes from knowledge, you have the choice to continue to lie to yourself if that is actually your best course of action. And you also have the choice to change things when a better course of action becomes available.

So, during all of your inner chatter, take the time to notice what it is you are doing. And also notice the act of noticing itself. And if you are doing something unseemly- like lying to yourself - know that you are doing it. And know why you are doing it.

You don't have to change anything right now. But with the knowledge of what's true, you have the power to address the core "root" issues and weed out that which no longer serves you.

There are sometimes very good reasons to practice self deception. And when you mindfully know that they are actually good reasons instead of harmful reasons, there's no problem with it. Go ahead and delude yourself. Just know the truth of what you are doing.

When the time is right to learn tools for self knowledge, and really get down to the business of addressing your inner truths, find yourself a class in Mindfulness techniques.
